I work as a health journalist and have some lovely regular clients. Specialist media (with some exceptions) does tend to pay a higher rate than some of the nationals but there is still a wide variation in what they will offer. Some are open to negotiation but others have set rates they pay everyone, take it or leave it.

For this week’s Premium newsletter we’re doing another deep dive into our finances and I’m going to give a breakdown of the lowest, average and highest rates I earned in the past 12 months across a range of publications and article types. Sometimes I work per word, other times per day, sometimes per project. I always keep in mind how much times I’m spending on a commission for the rate offered.

So let’s dig in!
