It is almost a year since Freelancing for Journalists launched its first podcast episode just as the UK was being plunged into the first lockdown.
Not exactly the year that any of us were planning but we’re so pleased that so many of you have found the podcast helpful. It’s also very strange doing all this when we have only seen each other in person ONCE since then.
Read on to find out all about what’s coming up in series 4 which launches today! But first a little bit of a look back over what we have done so far across three series and 24 episodes (20 regular, three bonus and a dualcast).
Where the freelance work is and Pitching and providing the goods have been our most popular episodes to date. But a stat that tells you everything you need to know about freelancing is that our episode on Imposter syndrome is also up there at the top.
More recently one of the first episodes we did on Working, homeschooling and dealing with lockdown had a resurgence to get to number three in the charts. I think we can see what has been on your minds in the past couple of months. Little did we know when we recorded that back in March 2020 just how difficult that would prove to be.
Almost 60% of listeners are from the UK but we also have a lot of listeners in India and the US. Overall we have listeners in 93 countries including one or two we had to look up on a map. Just shows what an international and diverse bunch we freelance journalists are.
We’ve blown out the socially distanced candles on our birthday cake and without further a do, let’s move straight on to what we have coming up in series 4.
Our first episode out today is on Finding case studies and experts. Now is probably a good time to announce we have a fantastic new sponsor. Response Source are supporting the podcast this series and account manager Tom Bettinson came on to provide some excellent wisdom on making the most of the journalist enquiry service. He was joined by freelance documentary maker Kate Dooley who gave some fantastic insight into how she works to develop relationships in order to get that little bit extra from interviewees.
This series we will also have episodes on:
Should you ever work for free?
Trolling and online abuse
Training and qualifications
Finding a mentor
Demystifying TikTok
And a dualcast with our friends over at Northern Natter
Triumph of the week
We welcomed our new delegates onto our four-week online course and they already seem like such a lovely bunch! Really looking forward to hearing their ideas and working with them to get those pitches honed.
That feeling when…
Some lovely, lovely person you are working for makes sure you have access to all the paperwork needed for payment well in advance. These are the people that make the world go round. We freelancers see you and appreciate you!
Do keep sending in your Listener Dilemmas for us to answer in the next series of the podcast.
