Last week I was offered a place on a bespoke press trip to a very exciting location. A race company wanted to fly me out to a tropical island, where I would recce a marathon course before doing some sight seeing and beach bathing.

I have reviewed plenty of races in the past but this particular trip was to promote both the race, and the location to British tourists. It wasn’t a race report and it wasn’t a travel piece - it was a bit of both.

They wanted to know what angles I would pitch, and which publications I would be targeting. And I needed at least one commission confirmed before they booked my flights. I quickly had to get my thinking cap on and come up with a list of ideas.

In the premium newsletter today I will share how to develop destination ideas and how to make the most out of a press trip - particularly if you are not normally a travel writer. I will also share an example of a successful pitch I sent earlier in the year when I went on a press trip in the Lake District.
